Supported employment (SE) is an effective service approach to promote the inclusion of persons with disability in work. SE has been defined as “competitive employmenta in an integrated setting with on-going support services for individuals with the most severe disabilities”2:548. The SE concept is based on the assumption that when the right type and intensity of support is provided, persons with the most severe disability can (and should be) integrated into competitive employment. Essential steps taken as part of SE comprise assessment, job finding, job analysis, job matching and job coaching. SE affords employment opportunities for persons with disability who meet the requirements of the job and are paid accordingly. In SE, job coaches provide on-going support that is determined by the worker’s individual needs and by the particular SE programme.
